Reputation Systems Presentation

November 10th, 2008

Bryce has made his presentation available for review and download on Slideshare. This includes the speakers notes and a number of slides that were not part of his presentation (but were part of the full talk presented at the 2008 IA Summit).

Assignment 02 Notes

October 14th, 2008

In addition to any individual feedback that is provided on Friday, I would like to add the following general feedback that all of your brand presentations might benefit from. Most of this was shared in the crit — but it bears repeating.

1. Where applicable for your concept — please consider the injection of fun into your brand identity

2. When assembling your presentation — please consider the in person presentation… many of the presentations were too hard to read on the Plasma.

3. This rolls back to your initial business concepts — but if you have a personal connection to the idea, use it as part of your lead in.

Clarification For Tomorrow’s Deliverable

October 9th, 2008
There have been a couple of questions about what is required for tomorrow’s brand critique.

The minimum requirement is a single name and three logos. You *may* use the same tagline and brand architecture diagrams for all of the logos — provided that it works strategically with what you have designed.

If you have a single name chose, please proceed as noted above and be prepared to present and defend your ideas.

If you have more than one name in consideration, you should present *at least* three creative directions total (a minimum of one for each name, but more may be required to ensure that you have explored enough options). Please note that in the case of multiple names, your taglines and brand strategies *may* be different across the names (it depends on if your names a categorically different or just slightly different).

Bottom line… don’t restrain yourself creatively, but you should be decisive in your work by evaluating options and narrowing focus.

See all of you tomorrow.

Assignment 01 Wrapup and Assignment 02 Thoughts

October 6th, 2008

I wanted to follow up on Friday’s class and add some preparation notes for next week’s class.

Overall, I was very pleased with the creativity in your concepts… There was innovation and personal connections to ideas that I did not expect as well as concepts I know to be viable business ventures (as they’re ideas we’ve kicked around the office).

Most of the ideas were presented well — though some of the ideas could have been presented more succinctly. In addition, I would encourage wider participation from the group as, I am sure, you would each want active group feedback on your own work.

For this week’s class — everyone will recap their Concept presentation (with any refinements or enhancements) and will make your initial presentation on Brand. We will go in reverse order by last name.

Your concept presentation will be considered final at this point and you should plan on providing your final concept document at this point. I will communicate a grade with each of you individually.

For the brand presentation, you should present and defend at least three concepts that include both a logo, a tagline/soundbite, and one or more diagrams that define the framework for your brand — these diagrams should be gathered from the examples provided in class (http://www.litfin.com/autumn08/blog/2008/10/brand-examples-from-03-october-presentation/) or through your own research. The importance of this extra strategic thought ensures that your concept and brand have documentation that we can use as an evaluation tool for future creative work.

As I mentioned before, we will be joined by John McCollum of the Columbus-based Element (http://elementville.com/main.html) as a guest critic.

Finally, going forward, I’ll be bringing a jump drive and everyone will copy their presentation materials to it during class.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Examples Of An Elevator Pitch

September 26th, 2008

I was thinking this evening that an Elevator Pitch might be a bit of a foreign concept to most of you, so following are some additional information resources that should help you in the coming week:

Wikipedia Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elevator_pitch (Good Overview)

A YouTube Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq0tan49rmc The guy in the video is a bit of dolt, but he makes some good points on what a pitch should contain. Those include:

  1. What problem does your idea solve? (e.g., what is the under- or non-served niche)
  2. What is your value proposition? (e.g., how are you unique, different or better than others)

I would add that you should address the audience for your business - who is the for and why do they care? The guy in the video also adds that:

  1. It must be succinct… I agree. 60 Seconds or less. This is about 150-200 words.
  2. Easy to understand… I agree. Can you explain this to an accounting major at a bar?
  3. It must make money… For the purposes of our class, I disagree. Don’t worry about making money.
  4. Your idea must be irrefutable… I agree to some extent, but rather than being bulletproof, I’d like to see your openness to constructive feedback and outside views to improve your idea.

I would add that your pitch should be conversational and, as you will be presenting 3 ideas, it should be customized (don’t just craft one good message and find + replace your other two ideas into it).

Hope this helps. Enjoy your weekend.
